MADRID, 26 May. (EUROPEAN PRESS) –
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz stated that he plans to have a phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin again.
“My last phone call was a while ago,” Scholz told the Koelner Stadt-Anzeiger newspaper this Friday. “But I plan to meet with Putin again when the time comes,” he said.
“Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is and continues to be a dangerous war, with huge casualties on both sides and terrible destruction in Ukraine,” Scholz said. Noting that the German government will not supply Ukraine with F-16 fighter jets because they do not have stocks, he said, “We must continue to act wisely and prudently. The war does not seem to be decided on the battlefield.” this type of aircraft.
Regarding the end of the war, the foreign minister said, “Russia must understand that this is not about concluding some kind of cold peace, transforming the existing front line into the new ‘border’ between Russia and Ukraine.”
“This only legitimizes Putin’s robbery. This is a just peace and the precondition for this is the withdrawal of Russian troops.”
Likewise, he stated that his position in the war was clear: to actively support Ukraine and avoid a direct confrontation between NATO and Russia. “And never act alone, but in close coordination with our partners and allies, guided by our abilities and talents.”
“Since we have always followed this path, support for Ukraine in Germany and approval for sanctions against Russia is as high as ever. This is invaluable given the difficulties this war poses for everyone,” he said.
