Japan condemns nuclear weapons deployment in Belarus and expands sanctions against Russia

The Government of Japan this Friday condemned Russia’s decision to transfer Russian nuclear weapons to Belarusian territory, while imposing new sanctions on Moscow.

According to the Nikkei newspaper, government spokesman Hirokazu Matsuno demanded that the Russian authorities “stop such acts that increase tensions” and assured that they will continue to monitor the situation “with great interest”.

“As Japan, the only country exposed to an atomic bomb during the war, we absolutely cannot accept the Russian threat of nuclear weapons,” he said at a press conference.

SANCTIONS ON RUSSIA

Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the expansion of sanctions against Russia “in light of the current international situation surrounding Ukraine and to contribute to international peace efforts aimed at resolving this problem”.

Portfolio said in a statement that the measures included freezing the assets of 78 organizations and 17 individuals, banning exports to 80 Russian enterprises, refusing to export goods “contributing to the strengthening of the Russian industrial base”. and a ban on the “provision of architectural and engineering services” to Russia.

Those sanctioned include officials from the annexed Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson and Zaporizhia regions, the military and a TV presenter.
